We are using Mathematica VERSION 9.0 as of March 27th 2013
Windows (XP/Vista/7) Install Instructions
Notice for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 Users
- If you have used Mathematica in the past on your computer you need to remove all math fonts from the fonts folder found in control panel.
- USER ACCOUNT CONTROLS - MUST BE TURNED OFF
- To turn off User Account Controls, go from Start to Control Panel and open User Accounts. Click on User Account Controls and choose to turn it off completely.
- You must be on campus or connected via the student VPN.
- You MUST have \\sharedapps.knox.edu\pc_apps mapped to N:\
Directions:
- Right click on My Computer and click Map Network Drive. For Drive select N:
- For folder location type in \\sharedapps.knox.edu\pc_apps and check the box to reconnect at log-on then click Finish.
- You will be prompted for your Knox username and password. For username use knox\your username then your email password.
- Pc_apps will open. From this open directory locate the Mathematica folder and open it.
- Right click on Install Mathematica 9.0.bat and select run as administrator.
- When finished you will find a shortcut for Mathematica_9.0 on the Desktop.
- WINDOWS 7
- Go back to the Mathematica folder in pc_apps and open the required 9.0 folder. Locate and open the fonts folder. Select All fonts and copy.
- Locate your fonts folder on your computer (in control panel) and paste these fonts into it.
- Launch Mathematica
No desktop shortcut
If the desktop shortcut does not show up, try starting Mathematica 9.0 from the shortcut in the Mathematica folder on pc_apps. If it starts up fine, feel free to just copy that shortcut to your desktop yourself. If it does not start up, contact the Help Desk for Assistance (ext 7700).
WINDOWS 8
Effective 09-16-13 - the Help Desk MUST assist you with the installation of Mathematica:
Start with turning off user account controls and windows firewall - then remove any old Mathematica fonts from Control Panel
- Activate local Administrator Account (Windows Key and X on Keyboard)
Select Command prompt (Admin)
Type the following command: C:\windows\system32>net user administrator /active:yes
You should get a prompt that the command completed successfully - Set password for local administrator (Control Panel - User Accounts and Family Safety)
Click on User Accounts
Click on Manage Other Accounts
Click on Administrator Local Account Administrator
Create Password (Let the student do this and tell them to remember it) - Log off as user and log back on with the local administrator account
- This will take a couple of minutes to set up the administrator account
- Windows Key and X on Keyboard
Select Run - type in \\sharedapps.knox.edu\pc_apps
Log in Prompt will appear
Log user in - you will need knox\ for user or full email address
DO NOT map network drive - will not work for Windows 8] - Open Mathematica Folder
Locate Windows 8 Folder
Right click on Install Mathematica 9 and run as administrator
You should not need to copy fonts (see below). - Launch Mathematica!If it works - Great! If not, have them see a member of user services.Create the shortcut (also in the Mathematica Windows 8 folder) on the desktop of their normal user account. Then remind them that they will need to connect and authenticate to shared apps for Mathematica to run.If the fonts do not appear in the palette:
- Go back to the Mathematica folder in pc_apps and open the required 9.0 folder. Locate and open the fonts folder. Select All fonts and copy.
- Locate your fonts folder on your computer (in control panel) and paste these fonts into it.
- Relaunch Mathematica.
MACINTOSH OS X
- From Go - Connect to server and type in smb://sharedapps.knox.edu/mac-apps
- Authenticate with username@knox.edu and your network password. Locate the Mathematica folder and run the application from the server. There is no installer for Mac OS X.
After running the application for the first time, you can right click on its icon in the dock and select Options->Keep in Dock. This will create an alias for the application on the server that will automatically connect them when they click on it.
The Command-Line Option (Windows)
*** If all else fails - and it should not fail if you follow directions carefully - you can try the following as a last resort******
Access Denied - during installation
- Go to start. Type in cmd and then right click on cmd and choose run as administrator click yes at the prompt (if one).
- Type: net use n: \\sharedapps.knox.edu\pc_apps /user:knox\username
- Enter password, and it should say command completed successfully.
- Type N: and press enter.
- Then type cd mathematica.
- Finally type "install mathematica 9.0.bat"
- Mathematica should now install.
- When files are being copied it worked
- Restart the computer
- You must still ensure that N: is mapped as noted at the top of the page
