Determine the best location for your Owl

In a small huddle room that fits two to four people, place the Owl in the center of the table, at least 12 inches from the TV. If you're meeting in a larger conference room (up to 15 feet by 20 feet), place the Owl in the center of the table. The Meeting Owl should be at least 3ft (1m) from the TV, but no more than 8ft (2.5m) from the farthest participant to ensure that they can be displayed on the Owl's Main Stage.

In classrooms, the Meeting Owl Pro can be placed on a desk at the front of the room. The Owl can also be mounted to a tripod and positioned in the center of the room for an equalized learning experience.

Feel free to experiment with the placement of the Owl to best suit your needs.

Connecting to the owl

The Owl should already be selected as the microphone and camera, but if it isn’t, here’s how we get to the settings to do that. This process is similar while using platforms other than Zoom. Icons or locations of icons may vary.

  1. While in a Zoom call, click the small arrow next to the “Mute” button in the bottom left.

    1. Make sure “Meeting Owl” is selected for both the microphone and the speaker.

  2. Click the small arrow next to the “Video” button in the bottom left.

  3. Make sure “Meeting Owl” is selected for the Camera.

Owl Functions

The Owl learns where people are sitting in the room. If a new person sits at the table, or if you speak, then move to another location and speak again, it can take up to 5 seconds for the video to switch. Switching may take longer the further away you are sitting from the Owl. For testing purposes, we recommend testing with multiple people in the room with the Owl.

Troubleshooting an issue

If you find that the owl is not acting as expected, try the following in no particular order:

  • Unplug the USB from the computer and plug it back in.

  • Unplug the micro-USB from the bottom of the meeting owl and plug it back in.

  • Unplug the power cable from the bottom of the meeting owl and plug it back in.

  • Unplug the power cable from the outlet and try a different outlet.

  • Remove a USB extender. USB signal can only transmit audio and video so far before it starts to fail.
