Google Apps for Education Setup

Android Smartphone users have two options to use for email and calendaring. 

Option 1: Email and/or Contacts using the Google Apps for Education Knox Email Account 

Google Apps for Education automatically sets up the Gmail, Contacts, Tasks, and Calendaring apps as the Android Smartphone is initially configured and registered. 

If a Google Account has not been setup:

1. “Add an email account” feature of their phone (this process differs slightly from device to device)

2. Select Google as the type of account 

3. Use the option to use an existing account. 

4. For the username use your knox email address

5. Enter your Knox email password

6. Tap Next

7. Typically, you will now prompted for what items you wish to sync with the Google Apps for Education server. At minimum you should select:

   1. Mail

   2. Calendar

   3. Contacts

8. Tap Next

9. The account should not be available. It may take a while for all your mail, calendars and contacts to sync and be viewable on the Android Smartphone

Option 2: Use the Gmail web interface via http://my.knox.edu

The Gmail web interface offers access to mail, contacts, calendars, tasks, and briefcase item via the Android Smartphone’s web browser. Our mail server recognizes when you are using a smartphone and adjusts to use a specialized version of the webmail client on your smartphone

Advantages:

1. No initial setup is needed

2. No need to change password on the Android Smartphone

3. No need to learn/use other apps on the Android Smartphone

Disadvantages: 

1. If you’re using web browsers for other sites, it may be inconvenient to go back and forth from the webmail site

2. It may be easier to use the native email and calendar apps and leave the browser for other actions

Multiple Google Accounts on an Android Smartphone

End users may indeed have multiple Google accounts “on” their Android Smartphone. 

1. The user merely needs to add the additional Google account via the standard “Add an email account” feature of their phone (this process differs slightly from device to device)

2. They must select Google as the type of account

To view mail from the Gmail app on an Android Smartphone:

1. Open the Gmail app

2. Tap the Inbox section at the top of the screen to select your account
