When you play, save, or delete a voice mail, it is replicated on the other device. For example, if you play your voicemail from your computer and save it, your desk phone lamp will go out and the message is saved. If you delete the message from your desk phone you will see the email get deleted from your inbox.
The saved message age limit is set to 28 days. After 28 days the message will be purged from the system. You can extend this limit indefinitely by simply moving the message from your Gmail Inbox to another Gmail folder you create (ex. Saved Voice Mails). Once this message is moved to a different Gmail folder, it is removed from the desk phone and only resides in the Gmail folder.
