Java for CX - Mac

About


At time writing, JAVA versions higher than 8u151 will fail to launch the Java Applet.   End uses must remove later versions and must install version 8u131.

Installation


Remove presently installed versions of Java

  1. Open Finder by clicking anywhere on the desktop.
  2. Open Finder by clicking any open space your desktop.  (If you are not aware of what Finder is, please contact User Services for a brief lesson).


  3. Click on the Menu bar, click "Go" and the Go drop down menu will be displayed,


  4. From the drop down menu, click "Connect to Server"
  5. Double-click on the Terminal icon
  6. In the Terminal window Copy and Paste the commands below:
    sudo rm -fr /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
    sudo rm -fr /Library/PreferencePanes/JavaControlPanel.prefPane
    sudo rm -fr ~/Library/Application\ Support/Java

Install Version 8u151

  1. Open Finder by clicking any open space your desktop.  (If you are not aware of what Finder is, please contact User Services for a brief lesson).


  2. Click on the Menu bar, click "Go" and the Go drop down menu will be displayed,


  3. From the drop down menu, click "Connect to Server"


  4. Enter the following in the dialog box that opens:
    1. smb://sharedapps.knox.edu
    2. Click Connect


  5. A new dialog box will open.  You now need to:
    1. enter Knox email username 
    2. enter your email password
    3. click Connect 


  6. The Sharedapps dialog box will open.  
    1. Click on Mac-Apps
    2. Click OK


  7. The Mac-Apps folder will open.  
    1. Click on the JAVA_Installer folder  The contents of the folder will be displayed.
    2. Drag and drop the JAVA file to your desktop.


  8. Locate the Java_file folder on your desktop.  Double click on the folder to open it.


  9. Now double click on the JAVA Installer file.

  10. Follow the prompts to start the installation.

  11. When prompted by the following dialog box enter:
    1. the username you use to sign into your Mac.
    2. the password you use to sign in and use to make changes to this Mac.  
      Note: This password is different from your email password.  If you have not set a password for your Mac (some people have ignored our requests to create a password) the password will be left blank.


  12. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the install.
