Google Sheet Data Transfer for Chromebooks
If you are a Chromebook user and you need to transfer a large amount of text data to a Google Sheet, this tutorial may help. For this tutorial, your data must be separated by periods, commas, semicolons, or spaces. A mix of all of them is workable.
This will cover:
Extracting the data from a website
Formatting the data to Google Sheets
First go to the website you need to extract your data from. It should look something like this, with just text:
Once you’re on the website, press Ctrl+U to open the page source. This will open a new tab, which Chrome will automatically go to. You will see numbers on the side of the page now.
Press ctrl+A to select the entire page, then press ctrl+C to copy the data.
Open an empty Google Sheet in a new tab, then paste the data by pressing ctrl+V. It will look like this:
Press ctrl+A to select everything again, then click “Data” in the top bar, then click “split text to columns” (photo below).
The option to sort automatically, comma, semicolon, period, or space appears at the bottom of the screen.
Google can auto-sort data effectively, so that will usually be enough. But for this data I needed to sort by commas, so I selected commas.
There will be a blank column and row after Google is finished formatting. You can delete them by selecting the very top of the column or row (A or 1), then clicking “Edit” then clicking “delete column A”
After deleting the extra rows and columns, you should have a normally formatted Google Sheet!
